Decorate a front door for Halloween with removable pieces
Use lightweight decorations and suitable removable fixings while keeping the door, lighting and approach clear.

Find the usable part of the door
Check where the door swings, where a hand reaches for the lock and what the camera or peephole needs to see. That leaves a smaller decorating area than the whole rectangle. Keep the house number visible and avoid covering a ventilation opening or mail slot. The door still has to work normally when visitors arrive after dark.
A few flat paper shapes on a sheltered interior-facing surface may be enough. Outside, choose materials intended to withstand the weather expected in your area. Wet cardboard can sag onto the handle, and long fabric strips can catch in the latch. Keep hanging pieces short and firmly attached so wind does not turn them into something visitors have to push aside.
Match the fixing to the finish
Read the instructions for any removable hook or adhesive strip, including surface compatibility, temperature range and weight limit. A product described as removable can still damage unsuitable paint or a weak finish. Test in an inconspicuous area when the manufacturer permits it, and avoid applying it to freshly painted surfaces before the stated curing period.
Use an over-door hanger only if the door can still close and latch freely. Do not force it shut against a thick hook. If the fit is poor, move the decoration to a nearby wall or window with an appropriate fixing rather than altering the door's function for a temporary display.
Look at the approach after sunset
Keep steps and walking paths free of cords, pumpkins and loose decorations. Check that the porch light still illuminates the route. Battery-operated lights can remove a trailing power cord from the arrangement, but their compartments should be secure and inaccessible to small children. Use products rated for their location and follow their instructions.
Prefer flameless lighting around paper, fabric and dried foliage. If carved pumpkins begin to soften, remove them before they leak onto a step. A smaller display that stays tidy is easier to manage than one spread along the entire path.
At the end of the holiday, remove adhesive products exactly as directed. Pulling a strip outward when it is meant to stretch downward can damage the surface. Clean and dry reusable decorations before storing them, and discard pieces that have become brittle or torn. Keep the successful fixings' instructions with the display so next year's setup does not depend on guessing how they worked.
