Choose flat sandals for the outfits you repeat

Choose sandals for the clothes and walking you repeat most often. Fit, fastening and sole feel matter more than making every pair serve every occasion.

Black three-strap flat sandals with buckles and brown footbeds.

Take a familiar summer outfit as the starting point: perhaps straight jeans and a shirt, a loose dress or linen pants. Then think about where you wear it. A sandal for a short meal out does not necessarily meet the needs of a long day on foot. Start with the activity and choose a pair that feels comfortable for that use.

Try both sandals, fasten them properly and walk around. Check whether the toes and heel sit comfortably on the footbed without overhanging, and whether straps rub or require constant gripping with the toes to keep the shoe on. Fit varies between designs, so a familiar size number is only a starting point. Do not count on an uncomfortable strap becoming suitable through wishful thinking.

Look at the hem above the shoe

A thin sole can make trousers longer in practice than they are with sneakers. Check the back hem for dragging and the front for catching underfoot. A dress may move freely with the same sandals, while a wide trouser needs shortening or a different sole height. Choose the combination before making an alteration that affects every other shoe.

The color does not need to match a bag. Tan, black, metallic and brighter shades can each work across several outfits when their shape feels familiar. If your clothes already include several colors, a simple sandal may be enough. If most outfits are neutral, a colored pair can provide detail without requiring another new piece.

Choose details you will maintain

Read the material and care guidance, especially if the sandals may encounter water or dusty paths. Ordinary fashion sandals are not automatically suitable for water, uneven terrain or every walking condition. Check the intended use and choose footwear appropriate to the route rather than relying on a product photograph of a beach.

Fastenings should be manageable for you. A buckle can offer adjustment but take longer to use; a slip-on is quick but must still stay comfortably on the foot. The right compromise is personal. Once a pair fits well, try it with three outfits already owned. That is more useful evidence of versatility than a claim that it goes with everything.
