Make a coat closet work for different heights
Use the closet's vertical space according to who can reach it, with current coats easier to retrieve than seasonal extras.

See what the closet must hold now
Remove the coats and separate those currently worn from occasional and out-of-season pieces. Check pockets, condition and whether each item still fits its wearer. A closet full of unused coats can look like a shelving problem when the real issue is that its active collection has never been defined.
Measure the hanging space with actual coats on hangers. Long coats need clearance that short jackets do not, and bulky winter sleeves take considerable width. Avoid fitting a shoe shelf so high that hems sit folded on top of it. Check the closet door's movement before adding anything to the back of it.
Give children a reachable option
If children are expected to hang their own coats, provide a suitable lower rail or hooks where they can reach without climbing. Follow the hardware's mounting instructions and load limits. A lower position should still keep coats from trailing on the floor. Test with the child’s current coat rather than the empty hanger.
Adults can use higher space, while a clearly marked upper shelf may hold light seasonal accessories that an adult retrieves. Store heavy items where they can be handled comfortably and securely. Do not turn a pile of bins into steps for reaching the rail.
Keep small accessories together
Hats and gloves need a container that is easy to search, not a deep mixed bag beneath the coats. One basket per person can work, but a shared category basket may be simpler if ownership is obvious. Dry wet items appropriately before returning them to enclosed storage. Keep pairs together without adding small loose clips where young children can access them.
Leave room for a guest coat if the household often needs it, but do not sacrifice the entire closet to an imagined perfect hosting arrangement. A few spare hangers in a known place may be enough. Remove broken or unsuitable hangers that catch on one another and make everyday use frustrating.
At a season change, rotate the active coats and review the upper shelf. Label stored items clearly so a rain jacket does not become impossible to find during an unexpected weather change. The system should allow an exception without unpacking every container.
If the closet door still will not close easily, reduce the volume or reconsider the hanging direction before adding another organizer. The useful test is whether each person can take out a coat and return it without pulling several others onto the floor.
