Find a laundry hamper that fits its actual route
A hamper travels through doorways, turns and stairs. Choose it for that journey as well as the corner where it waits between wash days.

Carry your current laundry basket along its normal route and notice where it becomes awkward. Perhaps the handles catch on a doorframe, the basket blocks your view on the stairs or the load presses against a narrow hallway wall. Those details are more useful shopping criteria than whether a new hamper coordinates perfectly with the bathroom tile.
Measure the route
Check the narrowest doorway and the space beside the washer, not just the storage corner. A tall rigid hamper can have a small footprint yet be hard to turn when full. A removable bag may be easier to carry, but only if its handles are comfortable and its opening lets you unload clothes without wrestling with the frame.
Think about the weight of a realistic load. A very large hamper encourages everything to accumulate in one place, which can make laundry harder to move. Two smaller containers may suit a household where laundry travels up or down stairs. Leave hands free to use a stair rail and make additional trips rather than carrying a load that blocks your view.
Choose the opening you will use
A lid hides the contents but adds an extra step. In a shared room, that may be worthwhile; in a cramped closet, the lid might strike a shelf every time it opens. Check the clearance at full height. A narrow slot can look tidy but make it difficult to add a bulky towel or remove clothing that has tangled together.
Read how the liner and frame are cleaned. A fabric bag may be removable without being machine washable. Let wet items dry appropriately before storing them in a closed hamper; the container should not become the permanent resting place for damp swimwear or towels. Ventilation and an easy-to-clean interior can matter more than decorative weave.
If you sort laundry before washing, match the compartments to your actual categories. Equal-sized sections are not always useful when one type of load is much larger than another. Removable bags also need somewhere to stand while being emptied, so look at the whole system rather than only its front view.
Before ordering, mark the footprint with paper and leave the nearby door open. There should still be room to reach toiletries, dress or step out of the shower. A hamper earns its floor space by making the next laundry step easier, not simply by containing the largest possible pile.
